A heat pump’s ability to both heat and cool a home makes it incredibly useful at any time of year, but these systems can occasionally have issues that prevent them from working properly. Some heat pump issues can cause your system to continue blowing cool air when you have switched it to heating mode, leaving you freezing this winter in Hagerstown, MD. Here are a few reasons why this unfortunate behavior may occur.
Reversing Valve Issues
The reversing valve controls the direction in which refrigerant moves through your heat pump. When the system is in heating mode, its outdoor coils function as an evaporator, and indoor coils act as a condenser, but when the system is in cooling mode, the opposite is the case. By directing the flow of refrigerant, the reversing valve determines which mode your system will operate in.
The valve may have some kind of mechanical defect, or debris may have forced it to remain in an inappropriate position. HVAC technicians can resolve such problems during a maintenance sweep.
Dirty Coils
For the refrigerant in your heat pump to absorb heat, air must be able to make contact with the evaporator coils. If debris gathers on the coils, however, this may not happen. As a result, airflow will decline, and the system may output cool air instead of the heat you expect.
Thermostat Malfunctions
Finally, your heat pump’s strange behavior may have no direct connection to your heat pump at all. Instead, your thermostat may be to blame for your system continuing to blow cool air while in heating mode.
This may happen either because someone has accidentally set the device to an excessively low temperature or because some electrical or mechanical issue is preventing your thermostat from properly communicating with your system. Luckily, in the first instance, the solution is a simple one: Raise the temperature on your thermostat and program it correctly. In the second case, you may require repair services.
